Saalbach Hinterglemm

1898
  In the history of a municipality it is not very often that the developement of a sport equipment called "Sky" changes a little village into an international tourist center. This happened 1898 in Saalbach Hinterglemm.

In this year Josef Wallner brings the first "Sky" into our village. In farmer times the municipality was one of the poorest in our region. Wallner wants to leave his village and move to Saalbach. But this was not possible, because his family was to big an so there was no place for his family. He went back. As a present he gave his brother-in-law Bachmann a pair of ski. It was a luck that the teacher in Saalbach, Peter Höll, gets the skis and he knows what they are for. He copies some skis and gives them to some pupils for skiing. This is the beginning of skiing in Saalbach.
 
1901
  The teacher Ludwig Ramsauer comes to Saalbach an likes the idea of teaching skiing. His sister, called Klara, was one of the first persons who knows how to ski. The two teachers are the pioneers and Saalbach Hinterglemm profits a lot of them
 
1903
  Our skiing area will be discovered by Dr. Theodor Gemeiner and his friends, he becomes settled in Saalbach Hinterglemm and he makes a lot of publicity for our region.
 
1909/1910
  Saalbach Hinterglemm becomes more important and the interest of the population in skiing grows. The teachers try to force skiing under the population. The also try to teach the children of our area skiing, but many do not have skis.

The teacher Hueter becomes 6 pairs of skis for poor children.
 
1914
  The "winter sports club Saalbach" establishes with 44 members and is very important for the developement of the tourism in Saalbach Hinterglemm.
 
1923
  Teacher Hueter try to teach the children of our area skiing.
 
1925
  In the winter 1924/25 we could already count 800 overnight stays.
 
1929
  The first sport hotel "Penhab" open in Saalbach and buses drive from Zell am See to Saalbach.
 
1945
  Some men found a ski society and began with the building of a lift up to "Kohlmais".
 
1947
  The first chair-lift is built. Three other lifts followed.
 
1950/1951
  In Hinterglemm the "Zwölferkogel - person community" is founded and a lift was built. In the following years new lifts are built.
 
1959/1960
  The project for th Schattberg-cableway is finished and so they begin with the building.
 
1960
  National police ski-race - the first big ski event in Saalbach Hinterglemm.
 
1980/1988
  Ski Worldcup final
 
1991
  Alpine Ski World Championship Saalbach Hinterglemm
 
Today
  55 cable cars and lifts thereof 13 cable cars, 15 chair lifts and 27 drag lifts.

200 km pistes thereof 15 km difficult, 95 km middle and 90 km easy. All main slopes and pistes are snowed mechanically.
